The Story
Zeus was the child Cronus never swallowed. Raised in secret on Crete, he returned to free his siblings, led the ten-year war against the Titans, and drew the sky as his portion when the three brothers cast lots for the world.
His authority is less about strength than about the oath: he guards guest-right, suppliants, and sworn agreements, and the thunderbolt is the sanction behind them. His appetites are just as central to the mythology, a large fraction of this atlas is descended from him, and the resentment of that runs through nearly every story Hera appears in.
Did You Know?
- His name descends from the Proto-Indo-European sky father, and the same root gives Latin Jupiter, Sanskrit Dyaus Pita, and the ordinary word deus. It is one of the best-attested words in the language family.
- The forty-foot ivory and gold statue of him at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders. The sculptor Phidias reportedly asked him for a sign of approval and got a thunderbolt through the floor.
- Cretans claimed to have his tomb, which struck the rest of the Greek world as blasphemy, an immortal god cannot have one, and gave rise to the proverb that all Cretans are liars.
