The Story
Coeus held the northern pillar of heaven, one of four brothers pinning the sky at its corners while their father was held down for Cronus's sickle. His name is tied to questioning and to the axis the heavens turn around.
His daughters by Phoebe are the more famous line: Leto, who bore Apollo and Artemis to Zeus, and Asteria, who threw herself into the sea to become the island of Delos where those twins were born. After the war he went into Tartarus with his brothers.
Did You Know?
- The Romans called him Polus, the pole, the axis the sky turns on, which is about as literal as a translation gets.
- His name is generally tied to the verb for asking or questioning, making him a Titan of inquiry with not one recorded thing to say.
